How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Clever Kitty Care starts with one question: will this product fit the cat, home and routine it is meant for? For a litter box, that means your cat's size and habits, the space available and how much upkeep the product needs.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the cat and the home

A large automatic litter box may not fit a small bathroom. A high-sided box may be hard for a kitten or older cat to enter.

We check dimensions, entry height, capacity, litter compatibility, power needs and cleaning access. For feeders, fountains, furniture and grooming tools, we consider the cat's size and needs, the space, and the daily routine.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the details makers list, such as sensors, cleaning cycles, app controls, waste storage, filter types, pump care, bowl design and included accessories.

Makers describe products in their own words, so we name the brand for each claim. We also note maintenance needs, replacement parts and warranty terms when listed.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like sensors that miss a cat, hard-to-clean parts, noisy pumps, flimsy furniture or filters that need frequent replacement.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A litter that works in one box may not suit another, and a fountain that is easy to clean may matter more for some households.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell similar models under close names, so we check each model name, its listed features and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip products with unclear model details or a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are based on research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Our guides are general shopping information, not veterinary advice. Ask your veterinarian about changes to your cat's litter habits, diet, grooming or mobility.
